We have opportunities available to prepare, cook, and serve dinner for the residents at City Team Oakland and the unhoused community there. Meet new friends while having fun and serving others at the same time. Space is limited. Participants must be at least 8 years old to participate.
Reusable Bag Wrap Up
You donated approximately 500 reusable bags last month to City Team in Oakland! Thank you to all who donated! If you would like to continue to give reusable bags, going forward we are going to be collecting bags the last Sunday of every month. These bags will continue to benefit residents of City Team Oakland. If you have any questions, contact Lisa Herrington.
We will be preparing, cooking, and delivering dinner for the residents of Goodness Village in Livermore. This is an amazing opportunity to connect with others, have fun in the kitchen and serve people all at the same time! Space is limited for these serve opportunities and all participants must be over the age of 14. Register at the link below!
In July/August we will be collecting good quality backpacks and school supplies for Beyond Emancipation. They serve kids who are aging out of the foster care system. This year we are also doing something new. For every backpack that’s donated, Blue Oaks will match that donation. We’ll provide more details in the coming weeks.
During the month of May, we were able to collect 6 guitars, 2 violins, and one guitaron for the Mariachi Program! Thank you for your support!
PUSD established the Mariachi Program in response to a lack of participation in the established music program by disadvantaged students, students learning English, and foster children. The Mariachi Program has been successful in targeting students who have traditionally not participated partly because of perceived and real costs related to instrument rental and/or lack of music training.
We also were able to support the Mariachi Program by donating $3,500 to cover some of the costs of uniforms for the students in the program!
There will be several opportunities to serve over the summer for all ages. Be sure to read the weekly updates or the latest news to stay up to date on all that’s happening as we serve our community.
A Note From Pastor Lisa Herrington
When we were putting together our list of accepted instruments for the Mariachi group, we hesitated to include the guitarrón, which is a large bass guitar. They are expensive and unique. We couldn’t fathom anyone just having one laying around. But we decided to include it, maybe someone would want to help purchase one. But we completely wrote it off as a possibility. Imagine our shock when on the very first Sunday of collection someone brought a guitarron. Of course, giddiness and excitement ensued but later as I reflected on it, it became more serious.
There’s a verse in Ephesians that talks about how God is able to do exceedingly more than we could imagine or ask. Think about it. The very best we can possibly dream up pales in comparison to what God is capable of doing. Richard Bach and Joe Hartley say, “Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they’re yours.” If we fight for our limitations, we get to keep them.
Thankfully God doesn’t give us what we ask for but rather what He knows is best. While the guitarron is just a small example and not some grandiose Godly gesture, I think it’s impossible to miss God when He cares about even the smallest details, maybe even especially when He’s in the details. Either way I was reminded how easy it is to leave God out, and limit what is possible, because all I see are limitations.
